Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Tutorials
A Wondrous Piece of Software Unravelled
This new and growing selection of Lightroom Tutorials will bring clarity to the apparently bewildering array of options within this epic tool.
Lightroom truly is a great piece of software and one that changed my working life and has revolutionised the world of Digital Photography.
The inception of Lightroom really has brought a breath of fresh air to the working lives of so many photographers.
I'll do my best to guide you through some of its best features...

For the first time, if you don't need to carry out complex retouching and composite work, everything is intuitively to hand within one easy framework.
From Cataloging and Organising, to making Image Adjustments, Slideshows, Printing and even Web Galleries—it's all in one place.

Through my Lightroom Tutorials, I will start, as ever, with the basics.
I don't intend to rewrite the manual but I do intend to highlight the factors I find to be the most important when working within Lightroom...
The first major point to understand is that this software is primarily designed to work with RAW files.
If you haven't already, please do read my article on the
RAW File Format
and why I believe it to be the best foot forward.
Further to this, I have also written an article on how Lightroom handles files when you have chosen to simultaneously shoot both
RAW and JPEG
File Formats.
In short, there are no two ways about it—if your camera can shoot RAW and you are not making use of that facility, you are not getting the best out of your investment.
Nor, for that matter, are you getting the best out of your editing software...in this case, of course, Lightroom.
Over time, I will begin to unravel for you:
- How best to
import
your images;
- Best practice when
renaming your files
in Lightroom 3's Import Module;
- understanding and adding metadata to your photographs;
- choosing the most useful tools;
- getting your photographs out of Lightroom efficiently.

So, what do all those buttons and sliders do?
Stick around to find out!
In the meantime, before embarking on my Lightroom Tutorials, do make sure you've not only read the piece on the
RAW File Format
but also
Understanding Histograms
to make sure you keep up with the
must-know jargon.

Aperture vs Lightroom: Peas In a Pod or Poles Apart?
There are other examples of editing software in the digital domain, Apple's
Aperture is perhaps considered the main contender.
I have clearly chosen the path of Lightroom and would love to hear your views on the matter, as would other visitors...
